Calcium is needed to convert CO2 in the soil into bicarbonate or calcium carbonate. Otherwise the CO2 captured by plants during the growing season is rereleased when the plant dies. Remineralizing the soil with rock dust (basalt works well) adds enough calcium to the soil to make it a good carbon capture method. Remineralize.org has more information on the topic.
